Want Customization? Android is the Way to Go
Choosing
a smartphone can be a complicated decision to make. You may be the type
that wants everything figured out for you, or you might want to really
make your phone your own. Android devices come with a high level of
customizability. The iPhone, in comparison, has many features locked
down, with only a few basic settings you can change. Here are just a few
of the ways you can truly make an Android device your own:
- Widgets: On Android, you have widgets! You can
create custom-sized widgets for any app that supports them. For
instance, if you want to take a quick glance at your calendar, you can
create a widget to display your agenda for the day on your home screen.
There are widgets for weather apps, task lists, and more. Check out the
task list widget on the DROID Bionic below.
- Custom home launchers: Trick out your Android
phone’s home screen with a launcher app. You can change the transitions
between each screen, install custom themes, customize your app drawer,
and much more. Check out our blog post detailing how launcher apps work.
- Alternate keyboards: Don’t like your onscreen keyboard? Change it! We have another blog post
detailing some of the other keyboards out there. Some of these
keyboards have enabled users to text upwards of 40 words-per-minute!
Other keyboards like Thumb Keyboard are optimized for tablet use, making it easier to type while you’re holding your device.
- Rooting and ROMs: The developer community around the Android operating system is huge and incredibly active. If you really want to completely change how your phone works, you can do a process called “rooting,” which gives you, among other things, the ability to install a custom version of the Android operating system on your phone, or “ROM.” Check out what developers like Cyanogen, Koush, and Peter Alfonso are doing. Samsung actually hired Cyanogen based on his handiwork with Android. (Note: This process carries some risks of damage to your device, and it voids your warranty. If you decide to root or install a custom ROM, proceed with caution and do your research!)
- Ringtones: Want a Guns ‘n Roses song for when your buddy calls? On Android devices, you can load your own mp3s directly from your computer onto your phone, and cut them up into ringtones with an app like Ringtone Maker.
