Battery Conservation 101

Do you find yourself recharging your phone a little too frequently? Does it seem to die just when you need it most?  While smartphone technology has dramatically improved over the past decade, battery life still sometimes struggles to keep pace.
It’s time to figure out the cause of your battery drain and find the best way to conserve that precious power.

What’s Draining Your Battery?

The easiest way to find what’s hogging power is to check the gauge that’s built into your phone’s Android operating system. Hit the Menu button, scroll down to “About phone,” and then select “Battery use.” Here you’ll get a percentage breakdown of which apps and processes are consuming power. Typically, you will see “Display” on top – powering that fancy touchscreen display consumes a lot of power!
If you’re looking for a more advanced analysis of your battery usage, check out an app like JuiceDefender Plus. This will give you advanced control over sync settings across multiple apps, helping you prevent unneeded apps from syncing and abusing your battery life.

D.I.Y. Ways to Conserve Your Battery

So you found out what’s sucking up your battery life. Now what? There are tons of ways to save your battery life throughout the day. Here are a few basics that will keep you from being tied up to your charger.
  • Use a power management widget: Long-press on your phone’s homescreen, tap “Widgets” on the menu that pops up, scroll down and tap “Power Control.” This widget allows you to toggle Wi-Fi, BlueTooth, GPS, syncing for all apps, and your display’s brightness level. If you’re not using these features throughout the day, turn them off. You’ll be amazed at how much power you can conserve.
  • Keep WiFi on: If you’re near a WiFi network all day long at home or the office, it’s worth keeping your phone connected to WiFi. Cellular signals (particularly 4G/4G LTE) are notorious for how much power they drain. Go to settings, then Wireless & Networks, then WiFi Settings. Hit the menu button and click Advanced. Tap on Wi-Fi sleep policy, and set it to “Never.” Now, when your WiFi is turned on, it will stay connected, even if your phone’s screen is turned off.
  • Adjust screen timeout time: As you probably noted earlier, your display hogs a lot of power, even with the brightness turned down. Again, go into your settings, scroll down to Display, and then tap Screen timeout. From here, you can adjust the length of time it takes for the screen to turn off after you stop interacting with your phone.
  • Turn off 4G if you’re not using it: 4G provides amazing data speeds, but it can also drain your battery very quickly. An app like LTE Settings makes it easy to toggle 4G service on and off.

Accessories for Saving Battery Life

Our guest blogger Scott from Androidguys.com wrote yesterday about a number of accessories he uses to stay fully charged while on-the-go. We have a few other recommendations for tools that will keep you fully charged.
Extended batteries: If you simply want more juice from your battery, you can buy one with a little more capacity. You can find an extended battery for almost any device. Keep in mind that the increase in power usually means an increase in size, so you’ll need to buy a new battery door and possibly even a new case. Below is Seidio’s 3500 mAh extended-life battery for the EVO 4G.

External batteries and “juice packs”: You can almost double your battery life with simply an extra battery hooked up to your device. It seems impractical to have a battery hanging off of your device, but accessories like the Mophie Juice Pack Air Case conceal it within a sleek case.

Extra batteries: Sometimes it’s just easier to have an extra, fully-charged battery on-hand to pop in when your current one runs out. You can find a lot of great deals on batteries for your device on Amazon.com – for example, you can buy a standard battery for the DROID or DROID 2 for just $3.42!
