Customize Your Phone’s Home Screen with Launcher Apps
If you’re new to Android, you’re probably scratching your
head and wondering, “What is a launcher?” A launcher app helps you
customize what you see when you look at the home screen on your phone.
With one of these you can do things like change the transitions that
happen when you flip between different screens, install themes,
customize your app drawer, and enable one-click uninstallation of apps.
Sounds neat, right? Here are just a few of the launcher apps out there that can make your phone’s home screen a little more interactive and exciting.
GO Launcher Ex, Free: This popular launcher, made by the Go Dev Team, lets you do all of the above and more. You can even go so far as to designate certain gestures (such as “glide-up”) to open your app drawer, show notifications, or open up a specific application. Don’t forget to check out the custom widgets like GO Weather!
Circle Launcher, $1.00: This handy launcher widget calls itself a “more human, less linear” approach to organizing your apps. Place your favorite, most used apps around the circle for a more visually appealing and easier-to-use tool. You can use the launcher icons this app comes with, or create your own custom ones, and even arrange them in a horizontal or vertical line if you don’t like the circle
Gravity Home, $2.70: Gravity Home is a well-designed app and a great conversation starter when you want to show off your new smartphone. Turn the screen upside down and your favorite app icons will respond to gravity: hanging, falling, drifting, all while still remaining functional. You can also play with elasticity and friction to make your home screen even more exciting.
Do you use a launcher app or a custom theme? Which app or theme is your favorite?
