This feature, known as “tethering” or “mobile hotspot,” lets you share your phone’s data connection with other Wi-Fi enabled devices.
If you’re not familiar with this feature, you might be a little confused about how to get started with it. Generally speaking, you’ll need a mobile hotspot plan with wireless provider for the feature to work. Once you have that, here’s what you do next:

For Android phones:

  1. From the home screen, tap the menu key.
  2. Tap “Settings.”
  3. Tap “Wireless & networks.”
  4. Tap “Mobile Hotspot” to enable. (This may be called different things, depending on the carrier. Sprint phones, for example, say Sprint Mobile Hotspot).
  5. Tap “OK.”
  6. From Mobile Hotspot Settings, you should be able to see what your new wireless network is named in order to connect your other WiFi-enabled device such as a laptop.
For new Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) phones:
Note: this feature is not currently available on Windows Phone 7 devices, even after they receive the Mango update.
  1. From your Start screen, flick left to your app list, and click Settings.
  2. Tap Internet Sharing.
  3. Turn Sharing to On.
  4. Tap Setup.
  5. Type a name for your new network in the “Broadcast name” box. This is what will show up when you search for your new hotspot from your WiFi-enabled device.
  6. Tap Security type, and then choose whether you want a password.
  7. If you choose to have a password, type a password into the “Password” box.
Also note that this feature will not work if you don’t have a corresponding mobile hotspot plan enabled through your carrier. There are apps and methods for circumventing that; however, your carrier can detect when you’re using your phone as a mobile hotspot and not paying for it, so you could still end up paying for it on your bill.
If you’re currently in the market for a phone that can function as a mobile hotspot, look no further, because you can get a $100 Amazon.com Gift Card for buying a 4G device from Sprint or VerizonWireless with a mobile hotspot plan.
