How to Use Your Phone as a Mobile Hotspot
How to Use Your Phone as a Mobile Hotspot
If you’re not familiar with this feature, you might be a little confused about how to get started with it. Generally speaking, you’ll need a mobile hotspot plan with wireless provider for the feature to work. Once you have that, here’s what you do next:
For Android phones:
- From the home screen, tap the menu key.
- Tap “Settings.”
- Tap “Wireless & networks.”
- Tap “Mobile Hotspot” to enable. (This may be called different things, depending on the carrier. Sprint phones, for example, say Sprint Mobile Hotspot).
- Tap “OK.”
- From Mobile Hotspot Settings, you should be able to see what your new wireless network is named in order to connect your other WiFi-enabled device such as a laptop.
Note: this feature is not currently available on Windows Phone 7 devices, even after they receive the Mango update.
- From your Start screen, flick left to your app list, and click Settings.
- Tap Internet Sharing.
- Turn Sharing to On.
- Tap Setup.
- Type a name for your new network in the “Broadcast name” box. This is what will show up when you search for your new hotspot from your WiFi-enabled device.
- Tap Security type, and then choose whether you want a password.
- If you choose to have a password, type a password into the “Password” box.
